What is a teaching assistant?

Teaching assistants work in schools with infant, primary and secondary age pupils. Their job is to support the teaching staff and improve the educational experience for pupils. They can either be generalist, or specialist in a skill such as maths, science, creative arts or sports.

Unlike teachers, teaching assistant jobs pay and qualifications are not nationally set. So the salary range is between £12,000 and £21,000 but can be higher or lower depending on the school and qualifications. No specific qualifications are needed for entry, although experiences working with children and good numeracy, literacy and reading skills are important.

Teaching assistant jobs are rewarding, you’re integral to a child’s learning and the smooth running of a school. Also, you’re treated to the long school holidays!
